ok, so i've been very busy keeping up with everything going on. i've been working hard for the Sussex Showcase. A lovely collaborative mini-fest of art, illustration and live music. Susie Clarke will be performing along, Handmade (106 St James St) will be selling lovely handmade goods from Brighton and exhibiting some local illustration. In honour of Susie Clarke's single release I've created two designs for two of her songs and you will be able to get your hands on postcards, badges, prints and tote bags featuring them! Make sure to stop by the Green Door Store on Wednesday, 15 June 2011 from 5pm to enjoy a BBQ with the Brighton Sausage Co, an ice cream from UK's very own Dylan's Ice Cream and a drink with some live music and to get you moving! Once Upon a Time, An Exhibition by Angela Chick

We will launch the exhibition with a private view at the Handmade Shop (106 St James Street) at 8.30pm on Thursday, 30 June 2011.

Angela will be exhibiting work from an ongoing project which focuses on her obsession with collections. Her work explores the lives of others and creates a playful response to her everyday inspirations featuring illustrations, written word and textile work.

Handmade Brighton has been around for over a year now, and we realised we needed to utilise our basement space. We thought we could use it as a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work in a small gallery setting. This would provide the perfect place for artists to try out ideas, and share their work with the public. We also plan to run a series of workshops and talks which we will be publishing information about nearer the time. Handmade is a not for profit shop which allows the artists to keep all of their profits.

Using traditional methods such as embroidery, crochet, knitting,

cross stitch, tapestry, needle felt and plush toy making, the indie

well, it's a long weekend. i'm starting out with stained hands from making natural dyes + inks all day. it's a hard job, but someone's got to do it. pictured is mahonia berries. i got lots of nice greys. was surprised there weren't more violets or indigos, but when the juice oxidised it went from being a beautiful indigo, sometimes burgundy to a black or grey. interesting to experiment.

hello and happy new year! my goodness, it's been an entire month since i last updated. i feel terribly guilty for this. welcome to 2010. everything has been busy, is that a surprise? i've been trying to find time to think of some things i want to do this year. i don't want to call them resolutions, but i want to call them something. and i want to share them as well.

in a list//

:begin and complete exclusion diet, so i can finally know what i am sensitive to, and stop being so food miserable.

:maintain my personal blog, and i mean properly, as i originally intended it. this means i will be posting regularly, things i am working on, things i am looking at, and sometimes just things i like.

:i will not procrastinate as much as i did in 20

09. this means i will need to write more realistic to do lists as well, because i spend a lot of time making lists of things to do, that never get ticked off, and then i spend even more time feeling guilty about the things i haven't ticked off. today was the first start. update my blog was on the list, and this is something that can now be ticked off. after this, there are only two more things on my list. both completely achievable by the end of the day.

:challenge myself creatively. i have not yet decided how exactly this is going to happen. i have some ideas of things i want to

try out, and things i want to revisit. i just feel lately that my creativity is not what it once was, and this is a total bummer. i want to push myself to try some new things, and have more fun with what i do. that was always an element of my work i never thought i would lose, but lately i feel like i have.

:indulge in more small things that make a big

difference. things like reading books just to learn things (something i feel i haven't done in a fair few months), going for walks just for the sake of it, day trips, "one and a bit" sugars in my tea only every once in a while for that perfect cup, buying more nice sketchbooks and pens, experience new things, more quality time with loved ones, etc.

:be more organised than i was in 2009. this means putting dates in my diary as soon as i find them out, finding places for everything instead of just piling things up hoping it'll go away on its own, etc

:getting a studio/work place set up. pretty straightforward, but i would really like to have somewhere that is always set up for working, i might get a lot more done.

:take more photos. of nice things, and special t

hings. a lot of amazing things happened in 2009, and i love looking back at my photos to remember. i seem to have barely anything from summer onwards though. this could be for so many reasons, but i'm not going to let that happen this year.

:buy a scanner. i'd like to be able to post drawings i've been doing, and "bits and pieces".

i think something i never really do at the beginning of the year is actually assess how exactly i can make the new year better than the last. i've been thinking a lot lately, and i think this year is definitely going to be a good one. i've made sure my goals for the year are realistic, not unattai

nable like most new years resolutions can end up being. i don't want to spend the year feeling guilty for not doing what i set

out to do. these are all things that can happen with little effort.

yes i'm starting to think about christmas. i'm making realistic resolutions and i'm going to start with the one that would be best for me. in the new year i'll be starting an exclusion diet and tracking it on a blog. i'm going to start a project to run alongside it and i will hopefully be exhibiting it soon after. it's going to be quite a problem solving project. i'm going to try different materials and methods, things i've not experienced before. and i'm also going to get studio space.

had i written yesterday i could have wished you a happy halloween, instead i am writing today. happy november. got some good news to share, yesterday i bought an exposure unit, and it should be with me by the middle of the month at the very very latest. how exciting is that? i've also got emulsion, coating troughs, etc etc coming so i shall be screen printing at home sooner rather than later. which also means, i can now technically go for any studio space as i won't need screen printing things in it because i now own them myself. and it also means that the rush to find a studio is over, soon as that arrives, i'll be on it. thought i'd share the good news. think i'm also going to make a print top for my table. today i'm having a business lunch with my friend hannah to talk about plans for the future. today the weather is horrible...

Goodness me I've had a productive night. Finished two commissions, finished off some outstanding post, and even managed to fit in a "for fun" cushion. Yes hello, I'm Angela, and I've got plans. Big ones. One night a week like this and I'll be smooth sailing. My mind is whirring with ideas for upcoming collaborations, ways of making things happen, and inspiration. Step by step. And the first step is this week, to send off four of my cushions to new homes. I will miss them, yes, but they are all going to good homes. Love them, please. I am on a hunt for some studio space. It needs to be cheap, it needs to have screen printing facilities and it needs to happen now now now. I'm going to be contacting studios this week and that will be another thing that will hopefully be happening sooner than later. That's all for now, ticks on the list if you could...

Well summer came and went far too quickly. I'm so busy these days, I'm losing track of the time at light speed. Craft collective is shaping up nicely, and work is slotting into place. Bank holiday Monday was nice for me though, Yannik and I went to the park behind our house (now known to us as "our garden") and we did some drawing, took some photographs and relaxed together. This is something that doesn't happen enough.

When we were finished with that and the sun had started to disappear, we decided we'd go home and play with our slide projector. We cannot go on a tropical holiday together, but we came close. We saw an airplane, then we hid in the trees. We are going to make a project out of this, we had so much fun, and we want more! Love is something amazing.

Apologies for the EXTREMELY long delay in posting. I've been in a bit of a hectic place with the London show, breaking my foot, moving home and starting a new job. It's all been a bit crazy as I'm sure you can understand. The photo above is of my display at the London New Designers show (thank you to Amy French [http://amyfrench.webeden.co.uk/] for taking it, as I had no camera with me) The set up is not too far from what I had at the University show, only on a much smaller scale. Still with a focus on sketchbooks, etc. I had a lot of great feedback from the week which was nice, but I couldn't be there nearly as much as I would have liked because of my foot.

I've moved to Brighton now, and am working at a nursery as an Atelierista, which is "artist working with children". Based on the Reggio Emilia approach to education, if you get the chance take a look at some information on it. It's so great! I'm learning a lot from it and it's very nice. I've also been given the job of sorting out the "cosy areas" in the school which will be nice because I will be exploring the texture of the fabrics with the children to see what they enjoy most.

I'm starting to get my flat sorted with my boyfriend and it's so lovely, we're both really happy with it. Trying to make it reflect our creativity and so far I think we've done a lovely job. Hopefully once he gets some workshop/studio space sorted he can make us some furniture as well which would be even nicer. (Think recycled, repurposed, unique). I'm in charge of the soft furnishings which is nice, and we've got a great collection of cushions going on. I can see the sea from my window, and living on a main street is so inspiring just because of what I can see from my window. We've got lots of projects planned, and we're also in the process of starting up a craft collective as a sister army to the East London Craft Guerrilla. In case anyone is interested, here are a few photos Georgina Freestone from my course took of my work in the university degree show.

Now it's time to decide what I'll be showing at New Designers in London. It runs from the 9-12 July. For more information visit http://www.newdesigners.com . I'll be working with much less space there, and do I want to show more illustration? or textiles?

I had various plinths to show my sketchbooks which are a very big part of my work. On the table you can see a pouch I made, an embroideredd bookcase illustration, a small "travel" cushion, and an interactive cloth colouring book I had printed. I left out the dye pens and the book was called "Colour Me In" which people did, it was very nice.
This shows my cloth samples pinned up and my wallpaper. Some of the cloth samples are backed with fleece, and were the early design developments for the cushions. The wallpaper is printed with a set of cupboards, and grid to mimic the graph paper I had used so much in my collages for the early development of this work and a life size line drawing of a bookcase. Those rolls at the bottom are all 1.5 meter long line drawings I had done to test my use of large scale.

This was where I displayed my cushions and sketchbooks. I showed sketchbooks from my post projects which were filled with envelopes, letters and photographs people had sent me, as well as their secrets. There was a small sketchbook I used to collect snippets of public space conversations. This involved me sitting in public spaces and recording lines from conversations I could overhear. Very interesting to read through with all the broken sentences. I also showed a variety of illustrations in these books. I had many requests in my comments book from people wanting to buy my cushions. Good news! It was an extremely limited edition of cushions, and I will be pricing them in time for the London show, and contacting those who had left requests. There are only 8 large cushions in the series and three small.

Hello. My name is Angela Chick, nice to meet you. I draw pictures, and like to make things. This blog will be used to keep track of my inspiration and what's going on in my work.

Various illustrations and collage work.

I have created work that uses simple lines and a variety of processes to achieve interactive textiles. My work is conceptual and sometimes abstract, with a focus on composition and strength of line using found and collected materials to communicate my ideas.

I make things that intrigue and excite, things to involve others. The use of found materials informs my work, researching through collecting to seek out unusual materials and objects. This allows me to learn or create a story from the histories I find, whether fact or fiction, to create a playful narrative on paper as well as cloth. I also develop interactive research where I engage with the public to aid my inspiration. This has included projects in the post where I have asked strangers to send me information about themselves, which I then use to draw from. I have also approached strangers on the street with a pen and paper and asked them to anonymously write down a secret about themselves. I used their secrets to create collections of wallpaper and fabrics to interact with and to comfort the user, depending on the secret.

I have challenged myself with a wide array of styles and outcomes, producing anything from drawings to screen printed fabrics, and on to accessories. I strive in situations where I can interact with others, and I am forever inspired by this.

Wallpaper collection from my interactive secret project. The envelope pockets on the wallpapers each contained a hand screen-printed handkerchief with a personal message on it to comfort the user. Various processes were used to encourage the user to touch the wallpaper.

This project was based on the idea of space, and what you would find in a personal or public space. The cushions are made from recycled felt, and backed with either recycled fleece, or organic raised cotton. This makes for a super soft, luxurious cushion which is irresistible to cuddle. The colours were taken from my collection of stationery (post it notes, lined paper with margins, etc) The abstract lines and style of this work make it accessible to many, but they could also be made on commission for people who want a more personal collection for their rooms.
